2. Step-by-Step Chemical Protocol for Fresh Borehole Water
Deliver & Fill to Operational Level
Fill the pool until water reaches halfway up the skimmer mouth. Keep the filtration system turned OFF during the fill so raw sediment is not forced prematurely into your sand filter.
Add Metal Sequestering Agent (Metal Trap / Metalgon)
Before adding any sanitizer, pour in a quality metal remover or sequestering agent. This chemically bonds to dissolved iron, copper, and calcium, holding them in solution so chlorine cannot react with them to cause surface stains. Run the pump on Recirculate for 6–8 hours.
Test & Balance Total Alkalinity (TA) & pH
Borehole water in Harare often has variable pH. Test using a 4-in-1 test kit.
- Total Alkalinity Target: 80 – 120 ppm (adjust with Sodium Bicarbonate / Alkalinity Up).
- pH Target: 7.2 – 7.6 (adjust with Hydrochloric Acid or Soda Ash).
Shock Treat with Chlorine (24 Hours Later)
After the metal sequestering agent has fully circulated for at least 24 hours and pH is balanced, apply a granular calcium hypochlorite shock (approx. 500g – 1kg per 50,000L). Dissolve in a bucket first and distribute evenly around the pool perimeter.
Add Flocculant / Clarifier & Continuous Filter Run
Add a swimming pool clarifier to bind micro-particles. Run your sand filter continuously for 24 to 48 hours. Backwash and rinse the sand filter daily until the sight glass runs completely clear.
